“\u201cDove serve\u201d is a song written by Martina Tarmina Passariello, at the time ranger, today scout leader in Teano 3 scout group. The song was conceived in the context of one of the ROSS (\u201croute di orientamento alla scelta di servizio\u201d, meaning route for orienteering towards your service choice, a type of national event developed by AGESCI to help young scout about to end their journey in the crew to reflect on their scout path) set in Campania, my region. The song reflects on one of the fundamentals of scouting, service, through telling a story of a young girl realising she\u2019s grown up and she needs to find her way. <\/p>\n
As Pope John Paul II once said, service must become for a young ranger\/rover the true maxim of their life:
\n\u201cI ask you, rangers and rovers, to do your utmost to make the verb “”to serve”” the motto of your life, in the conviction that the gift of yourselves is the secret that can make human life beautiful and fruitful\u201d – Pope John Paul II<\/p>\n
The true meaning of scoutism is contained in service, in helping others and give themselves to others. That\u2019s the meaning of \u201cdove serve\u201d, to be where it\u2019s needed, to be \u201clight, salt in the sea\u201d, to learn how to love, how to listen to others, how to accept and face all the barriers and the challenges that life plants on our way. <\/p>\n
Martina and I met a couple of years ago at a national camp in Salerno, my city. The meeting with her has been fundamental in my life since that. \u201cDove serve\u201d came in a period I was unsure whether to keep my scouting experience going, due to personal querys. Her words made me reflect and pushed me to tackle my problems and to deal with the new adventure of the crew with enthusiasm, curiosity and personal awareness.
\nI consider this song to be my favourite, and I would love to share it with WSM participants, hoping these words might inspire them and made them reflect and get emotional as it was for me. I propose my personal interpretation of the song and I asked Martina\u2019s permission to perform it.
